Is Emirates Airlines The Best Airline In The World?
Emirates has been named “World’s Best Airline” and somehow it feels like there is an invisible two class system when it comes to airlines, at least when you speak to people in Dubai.
“Which airline are you flying”? Oh, not Emirates. Why not”?
Okay, I get it, Emirates is big and their planes and advertisements are seemingly everywhere. But can we take a step back and see if they are really the best airline or if only the constant advertisement makes us think that way?
I have flown with Emirates many times, in Economy Class as well as Business Class. So, have I with other airlines.
In my option, Emirates is a good airline. Good, but not great and not the best the airline.
Let’s start with the things I really like and think Emirates is doing better than its peers! The entertainment system is very advanced and has endless choices. I think it is really the best out there. Wi-Fi – All A380 (and they have a huge fleet of them) as well as most of the B777 offer Wi-Fi. The cost is only USD 1 for 500 MB and that sets them apart from other airlines. Of course, the speed depends on how many people on the aircraft are using it. Their frequent flyer program Skywards is really good. It is quite easy and fast to move up the tiers and avails great benefits once you reach Silver, Gold or Platinum. Forget the entry level, Blue, it doesn’t give you much. The free limousine pick up and drop off that comes with a Business Class or higher booking category is definitely a plus. The airport lounges across the world are at very high standards, in terms of services, food and drinks. The luggage allowance starts from 30 kg in Economy Class. It’s not such a strong benefit though because more and more airlines started going in the same direction. However, I like the weight concept Emirates applies on many routes (instead of the piece concept).
Okay, let me tell you what I don’t like about Emirates! The prices! It really depends what your departure point is and Emirates is really taking this approach to an extreme level.
If you are flying into Dubai or Dubai is just a stopover destination en-route to somewhere else, their fares are good and overall competitive.
If, however, you are leaving from Dubai, your ticket will be much more expensive. For example; you book a ticket Dubai – Frankfurt – Dubai, you can easily end up paying double the price as if you would fly Frankfurt – Dubai – Frankfurt. A while ago Emirates introduced a seat fee for anyone who wishes to pre-book their seat (applicable to their Special and Saver Fares). Do they really have to go down that route and follow the practices of budget airlines with the ticket prices they have….? The food on board is okay, but really not great. Especially when it comes to their choices. They should add some more variety. And that goes for Economy same as for Business Class. They have become very, very accurate with the baggage allowance. Make sure your checked in and hand luggage weight is within the limit, otherwise you end up paying a huge amount on excess baggage. Been there, done that! You feel that they started cutting cost. Instead of the hot towels they handed out before, you will now get a simple refreshing tissue. Okay, it’s just a tissue, but what comes next? Their service level has gone down. I had flights where I really had to run after the flight attendants to get some water because no one showed up or asking them to clean up the tray in Business Class an hour after I finished my meal. It somehow feels that they have become arrogant and know that they are considered as the best airline – almost like “we don’t need to proof anything anymore”
Again, just my thoughts and experience. Happy to hear your opinions!
